8 Types of Eczema (Part 2)

The list below are more types of Eczema that you must be aware of:

Hand Eczema

Often, Hand Eczema affects people who work with their hands and come into regular contact with chemicals or irritants.
Symptoms of Hand Eczema include:

• Redness and itching of hands and palms
• Dry, cracking, painful blisters

Neurodermatitis/Lichen Simplex Chronicus

Lichen Simplex Chronicus can be triggered by insect bites and increased levels of stress. The cause remains unknown.
Symptoms of Neurodermatitis include:

• Thickened skin that feels leathery
• Dark patches with noticeable lines

This type of eczema is similar to atopic eczema: it creates itchy, red patches in the skin that tend to thicken over continuous scratching.
For people with Neurodermatitis, keeping the patches moisturized and covered is important.
Rubbing or scratching the affected area will only interfere with the healing process.
When the skin is already too thick, medication is injected through so that it can penetrate the patch more effectively.

Nummular Eczema/Dermatitis

This is also referred to as Discoid Eczema. Nummular eczema can affect people of all ages. It is quite difficult to treat and it is triggered by an insect bite, dry skin or as a reaction to inflammation in the body.
Symptoms of Nummular Eczema include:

• Dark spots on the skin can appear similar to a ringworm infection and are shaped like a coin
• Spots may be itchy or not
• Spots can appear crusted and scaly or swollen and wet

The cause for Nummular Eczema is unknown, but with the right medication it can be completely treated and will not relapse. Get in touch with your Family Clinic to learn about it.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

This type of dermatitis is more commonly found in men than in women. It is more prevalent in patients with compromised immune systems.
The cause for Seborrheic Dermatitis is unknown but it can be triggered by increased levels of stress and fatigue, illness, changes in hormone levels, harsh chemicals, and cold weather.
It affects the parts of the body where oil-producing glands are present such as at the scalp, nose, chest and upper back.
Symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis include:

• Oily skin that appears inflamed
• White or yellowish flakes that surround the affected area
• Itchiness

It does not discriminate between age groups and can infect babies as well.

Stasis Dermatitis

Also known as venous stasis dermatitis; this type of dermatitis is caused by poor circulation usually found in adults over the age of 50 years. More commonly, this is diagnosed in women than in men.
Some Factors that increase the risk for Stasis Dermatitis include:

• Increased blood pressure
• Obesity
• Kidney failure
• Congestive Heart Failure

Stasis dermatitis generally affects the veins in the lower extremities. The veins then build up pressure and leak fluid out into the skin. In severe cases; ulcers and infections can be seen.
